Dr. André Costa Pinho
I am a general surgeon fully dedicated to the surgical and medical treatment of obesity and its associated metabolic diseases. I work at Unidade Local de Saúde São João in Porto — the highest-volume bariatric surgery centre in Portugal and the only one recognised as a Centre of High Differentiation for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity — and in private practice at Hospital CUF Porto. I am a member of IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders) and of the Portuguese Society for Obesity Surgery (SPCO), and my doctoral research focuses on the SASI bypass. Consultations can be held in English.

Who I Can Help
International residents and expats living in Portugal who are considering treatment for obesity.
Patients who had bariatric surgery abroad and need specialised follow-up, nutritional monitoring or treatment of complications in Portugal.
International patients considering having their surgery in Portugal, at an experienced high-volume centre.
According to current international guidelines (IFSO/ASMBS), bariatric and metabolic surgery is recommended for people with a BMI of 35 kg/m² or above, and for people with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above who have obesity-related diseases (such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea) not adequately controlled with non-surgical treatment. Every case is assessed individually by a multidisciplinary team.
